The sawmill was soon taken over by industrialist Nils Ludvig Arppe , who built ironworks in the premises. Wärtsilä Ab bildades 1897. År 1907 bildades ett nytt bolag med namnet Ab Wärtsilä Oy. Ett eget kraftverk vid Saarioforsen invigdes 1908. Wärtsilä hade nu utvecklats till ett modernt smält- och stålverk. År 1930 stod en galvaniseringsanläggning för elektrolytiskt galvaniserad järntråd klar.

Wärtsilä meddelar 21.8.2018 att man bygger Smart Technology Hub, ett nytt centrum för forskning, produktutveckling och produktion, i Vasklot i Vasa, Finland. Alla Wärtsiläs funktioner och personal i centrala Vasa kommer att flyttas till den nya Huben, tillsammans med logistik- och underhållsverkstaden från Runsor.
